Sample questions

Sample 1

Which single note lasts as long as two minims?

  1. A minim
  2. A crotchet
  3. A dotted minim
  4. A semibreve

The answer is D, A semibreve.

Each minim fills two crotchet beats, which makes four for the pair. The semibreve holds all four beats by itself.

Sample 2

In a bar of 2/4, the first beat is already filled. Which single note completes the bar?

  1. A minim
  2. A semibreve
  3. A crotchet
  4. A dotted minim

The answer is C, A crotchet.

In 2/4 only one beat remains after the first. A crotchet is exactly one beat long, so it fills the bar.
