Exam practice
Timed practice for Praxis Music 5116, set out in the board's own sections. Every answer comes with an explanation.
Praxis Music: Vocal and General Knowledge (5116) is a licensure test for music teachers, owned by ETS.
This practice test covers history, theory, performance, teaching and professional issues, for vocal and general music teachers in schools.
The listening questions use our own piano recordings. They cover finding errors against a printed score and judging a piano performance. Each error question plays a single melody. Performance questions judge tempo, balance, dynamics and articulation on the piano. Recognizing a style, period, instrument or voice by ear is not included. Intonation, blend, tone and diction are not included either.
Exam mode runs a clock of 2 hours 5 minutes for the whole practice test.
The full practice test holds 125 questions.
Study mode has no clock. It checks each answer as you go.
In the first movement of a Classical piano concerto, where does the soloist traditionally play a cadenza?
The answer is A, Near the end, before the final orchestral tutti.
Near the end of the recapitulation the orchestra pauses on a cadential six-four chord, and the soloist improvises or plays a written cadenza. A trill on the dominant then brings back the orchestra.
Which articulation marking asks for the heaviest, most emphatic attack?
The answer is A, Marcato.
Marcato, the housetop accent (^), is stronger than the ordinary accent and asks for a marked, heavy attack. Tenuto asks for full length with slight weight. Staccato shortens the note. Legato connects notes smoothly.
Choir students in grades 9 to 12 need to hear each pitch's function in the key as they read. Which system best serves that goal?
The answer is B, Movable-do solfège.
In movable do the tonic is always do, so each syllable carries its scale-degree function. Fixed do ties each syllable to one pitch class whatever the key.
