Exam practice
Timed practice for MTTC Music Education 099, set out in the board's own sections. Every answer comes with an explanation.
MTTC Music Education (099) is a licensure test for music teachers, owned by the Michigan Department of Education.
This practice test covers listening, theory, history, creation and performance, and music education, for Michigan music teachers.
The listening questions use our own piano recordings. They cover intervals, chords, cadences, meter, texture, finding errors against a printed score and judging a piano performance. Each error question plays a single melody. Performance questions judge tempo, balance, dynamics and articulation on the piano. Recognizing a style, period, instrument or voice by ear is not included. Intonation, blend, tone and diction are not included either.
Exam mode runs a clock of 2 hours 30 minutes for the whole practice test.
The full practice test holds 93 questions.
Study mode has no clock. It checks each answer as you go.
In C major, the continuo bass moves through A, D, G, and C, with every note figured 7. Which chords does this sequence form?
The answer is A, vi7, ii7, V7, I7.
From each root to the next, the bass falls a fifth or rises a fourth, a circle-of-fifths pattern. With no accidentals in the figures, every chord takes its notes from C major. A, C, E, and G come first, and the chain ends on C, E, G, and B.
In a Haydn symphony, which movement is usually a minuet and trio in triple meter?
The answer is D, The third movement.
The Classical symphony usually runs fast, slow, minuet and trio, then a fast finale. Beethoven often replaced the minuet with a quicker scherzo.
A choir sustains a major chord without accompaniment. Compared with the piano's equal temperament, where do the singers place the third of the chord for the purest sound?
The answer is D, Slightly lower than the piano's third.
A pure major third, with the frequency ratio 5 to 4, is about 14 cents narrower than the equal-tempered third. Singers who lower the third slightly remove the beating in the chord. A higher third beats faster. Matching the piano keeps its beats. Tuning that changes with the dynamic leaves the chord unstable.
