Intermediate

Steps

  1. Take an even eight-note run.
  2. Play it as long-short pairs.

Level
Beginner

Steps

  1. Isolate one hand, voice or line for four bars.
  2. Play it until it keeps a steady pulse alone.

How to check it
Each part holds the pulse without the other.
Next
Recombine at a slower tempo.

Level
Beginner

Steps

  1. Before the entrance, set your hands or embouchure without sound.

Level
Intermediate

How to check it
The sound stays the same or improves with less movement.
Next
Record a before-and-after video.

Articulation Contrast

Goal
Control legato and staccato at the same tempo.
Level
Beginner

Steps

  1. Play one phrase legato.
  2. Play it again staccato.
  3. Keep the tempo and pitches the same.
How to check it
The difference is clear and the dynamic has not changed by accident.
Next
Alternate the two articulations bar by bar.

Dynamic Independence

Goal
Change volume without changing timing.
Level
Intermediate

Steps

  1. Choose an eight-note pattern.
  2. Play it at p and then mf and then f.
  3. Keep the tempo fixed.
How to check it
Note lengths stay the same at every dynamic.
Next
Shape one gradual crescendo across the pattern.

Smooth Register Changes

Goal
Cross a difficult break or shift without a bump.
Level
Intermediate

Steps

  1. Choose a phrase that crosses a register or position change.
  2. Practice only the crossing.
  3. Put the phrase back together.
How to check it
Tone and timing stay even across the change.
Next
Play the whole phrase.

Endurance Without Strain

Goal
Build stamina while staying relaxed.
Level
Intermediate

Steps

  1. Choose a comfortable passage.
  2. Play three one-minute rounds.
  3. Rest between rounds.
How to check it
