Pitch and Intonation

Hear the note before you play or sing it.

Unison Matching

Goal
Match a reference pitch from memory.
Level
Beginner

Steps

  1. Sound A from a reliable reference (A4, or the octave that suits your voice).
  2. Pause for two seconds.
  3. Play or sing the same pitch.
  4. Repeat ten times.
How to check it
Sound it with the reference: beats or wavering mean you are not yet in tune.
Next
Try three neighboring pitches in a comfortable range.

Hearing a Whole Step

Goal
Sing a major second accurately.
Level
Beginner

Steps

  1. Play C4 then D4.
  2. Sing the second pitch from memory.

Intermediate

Tuning to a Drone

Goal
Hold the tonic and the fifth steady against a drone.
Level
Intermediate

Steps

  1. Start a G drone.
  2. Sustain G for eight seconds in a comfortable octave.
  3. Sing D, a fifth above, against the same drone.
How to check it
Both notes hold steady and the fifth sounds settled.
Next
Move to C and its fifth.

Descending Interval Recall

Level
Beginner

Steps

  1. Hear G4 then E4.
  2. Wait five seconds.
