Improvise and Collaborate
Understand the form
- Before improvising, identify meter, harmonic rhythm, phrase length and the location of structural arrivals.
Start with a motif
- Develop a small rhythmic or melodic idea. Vary it rather than filling every space with notes.
Listen and respond
- In ensemble rehearsal, notice dynamics, articulation, harmonic changes and the phrasing of other performers. Practice entrances after unexpected pauses.
Check genre expectations
- Jazz, contemporary, traditional and classical improvisation have different conventions. Use official audition instructions to determine what is required.
